After a career as a professional librarian, county administrator, and an executive director of a nonprofit foundation, Karen Coleman returned to her artwork full time after retiring in 2000.  Mainly a self-taught artist until then, Karen has studied with many talented artists over the last several years and along the way fell in love with the world of plants and traditional botanical art.  In 2010, she was awarded a Certificate in Botanical Art & Illustration from the Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art, where she now teaches.  Her works have been shown in many local and international exhibitions in addition to solo shows.  Karen is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, Botanical Art Society of the National Capital Region, Botanical Artists for Education and the Environment, and a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA).  She is the recipient of a 2007 and 2009 Award for Excellence from CPSA.

Artist’s Statement:  Nature in all its variety is an endless source of inspiration for me.  My hope is that I will convey to the viewer a sense of wonder of these same things, as well as a deep respect for the natural world and a desire to protect what we have left.
