After a career as a professional librarian, county administrator, and an executive director of a nonprofit foundation, Karen Coleman returned to her artwork full time after retiring in 2000. Mainly a self-taught artist until then, Karen has studied with many talented artists over the last nine years and along the way fell in love with the world of plants and traditional botanical art. For the last few years, she has been a certificate student at the Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art, where she now teaches. Her works have been shown in many local and international exhibitions in addition to three solo shows. Karen is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, a board member of the Botanical Art Society of the National Capital Region, and a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA). She is the recipient of a 2007 and 2009 Award for Excellence from CPSA.
Artist’s Statement: Nature in all its variety is an endless source of inspiration for me. My hope is that I will convey to the viewer a sense of wonder of these same things, as well as a deep respect for the natural world and a desire to protect what we have left.
