Deborah is a fine art and art history graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University. After retiring from Federal civil service in 2009, she has become a full time artist; her primary media are colored pencil, pastel, and graphite, which make the most of her strong drawing and design skills. In addition to being a Signature member of CPSA and DC109, Deborah is also the President of the Maryland Pastel Society and a member of the Pastel Society of America, the International Guild of Realism, the Maryland Art League, and the Visual Artists’ Alliance of Maryland (formerly the Howard County Art Guild). She is represented by the Artists’ Gallery, a cooperative gallery in Columbia, Maryland, and Studio 55 in Baltimore. Her prize-winning work has been juried into numerous regional and national exhibitions and is included in private collections on both the East and West Coasts. Her work is also included in “Strokes of Genius: The Best of Drawing,” published by North Light Books in 2007.
Artist’s Statement: As a life-long artist, I am emotionally drawn to those spaces, both tiny and vast, where light meets shadow, where air takes on meaning in its embrace of objects, where form is at once revealed and obscured. As a life-long student, I have trained myself to use compelling compositional design, rich and powerful color, and accurate rendering of both form and light to evoke for the viewer the experience of a specific place and a specific moment.
